Looking south down the Salzach river towards the fortress and centre city |
We then spent the sunny afternoon wandering about the town a bit, discovering
a great bratwurst stall and an amzing shop selling painted eggs of all descriptions. We met up with Jen again at the
Augustine Brau beer garden and drank beer from heavy ceramic steins, which was just fantastic.

Prost! To drinking in a beer garden! |
After a couple of pints of beer we were ready for food and so found a strangely quiet restaurant (well,
it was until we got there!) and had traditional Austrian wiener schnitzel with potatoes, washed down with more Stiegl.
After checking out the local Irish bar, where Elvis strictly enforced the no water policy (you had to be there...), Suse and
I went out for boogie before bed.

From the fortress. We heard the cannons go off while we were up there. |

|
Salzburg itself was flat, but surrounded by imposing mountains. |
Sunday was unfortunately rainy but we didn't let that stop us climbing
up the mountain in the middle of the city, to check out the views from the Hohensalzburg Fortress and then the abby where
both the real Maria von Trapp was a nun and where parts of the film were shot. I was really pleased we found the cemetery
that features in the film too, although in fact a replica cemetery was made for the scenes.
