A weekend out west
23 - 25 April 2004

Although I'd only been back in the country for three days, I was keen to join Megan, Suse and Susy for a weekend in Bristol and Bath.  We caught Megabus on Friday night - and because I was late booking, I had to pay SEVEN TIMES the best ticket price!  Yip - £7 rather than £1!  Megabus is a new budget bus company going to several locations in England in basic buses (rather than coaches).

We arrived in Bristol at about 10pm and found our hostel, then headed out to check out the night-life.  It was really lively and the warm evening seemed to bring people out to the streets, reminding me of student days in Dunedin.  Bristol has two universities so had a similar feel.  We had a great night out dancing!

Saturday beamed bright and sunny and we walked down to the riverside where we brunched in the sun and Megan and Susy got sunburnt!  I was all ready to try "bubble and squeak" with my full English breakfast, but they didn't have any.  Next time!

We caught a bus up the hill to Clifton, a western suburb, to see the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge which was quite spectacular.  Apparantly it's even more so at night when it's all lit up, but then, we were in no state to come up last night!  It was just nice walking about in the glorious sunshine - it really felt as though summer was here!

This sign was at the end of the bridge because there have been a few suicides from the bridge...

We would have been happy just to sit and enjoy the sun, but we had to see Bath yet!  So we wandered towards the train station where for £2 we bought tickets for the train to Bath, just 15 minutes east of Bristol, along the Avon river.
